CRAIG ALLOTT – (Vocals, Guitar, Acoustic Guitar)
Craig started his musical career at the age of ten with the drums. He joined the H&H Cougar Brass Band to head to Australia to play in the World Brass Band Championships and appeared at the New Zealand Pavilion at Expo 88 in Brisbane. He also took an interest in brass instruments and played in the Salvation Army Brass Band for many years. Craig then took up guitar and over this period was voted Southland Guitarist of the Year 1999 and Southland Entertainer of the Year 2001. Craig is also a sound engineer for local recording studio “Riverland Studios” and is now performing in the popular duo “The Insiders” with Cheryl Anderson.
CHERYL ANDERSON - (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar)
Cheryl is the lead singer and also plays acoustic guitar in local bands “Bandit” and “The Insiders”. Cheryl also performs in acoustic bands “Bikini” and “Acoustic Sam”. Cheryl studied music at Southland Polytech 1998/1999 and the Christchurch Jazz School 2000/2001 and gained her A.T.C.C qualification from Trinity College in 2004. In 2003, Cheryl was voted Southland Entertainer & Vocalist of the Year. Cheryl recorded her debut album “What Lay Within” in 2004. This is Cheryl’s third year with Pipin’ Hot.
BELINDA ANDERSON – (Bass Guitar)
Belinda (Bindy) has been in covers band “Bandit” playing bass guitar and singing back-up vocals for just over 4 years. Bindy is also in an acoustic group, “Acoustic Sam” with two of her band mates. In 2004, Bindy won the Southland Musicians’ Club Bass Player of the Year award. Bindy is looking forward to recording her first original solo CD this year, and she is concentrating on her artwork.
LEON MCELHINNEY – (Drums)
Leon started playing drums at the age of 9 in a family band. He grew up “jamming” with his brother on bass and went onto playing in a church band for a number of years. Leon soon joined first working covers act “The Bedrockers” at the age of 17, he then went onto play in party band “The Lone Rangers” with brother James and local boys Craig Allott and Shane Robertson. Leon successfully auditioned for originals act “Cornerstone” in 1999, going on to do two nationwide tours and releasing one album. During this time, he wrote a number of songs and performed with “Cornerstone” and two-piece “Tantrum” with Leon Wilks. Leon was voted Drummer of the Year in 1999, with “Cornerstone”, and again in 2005 with “Bandit”. Leon began writing and recording a solo album in 2003 and finally released “Redefine” in late 2004. Leon continues to drum on local albums and perform live with various bands including “Bandit”, Pipeworkz and “The Kicks”.
SCOTT CALVERT – (Keyboards)
Scott started playing the piano as a young child and started classical lessons at the age of ten. While studying classical piano, Scott started playing for church at 15. He finished Grade 7 piano before joining an outreach band “Solution” in 1998. When Solution disbanded in 2000, Scott auditioned for local covers band “Vision” and started playing with them at the beginning of 2001, and is still playing with them now. Scott was awarded Southland Keyboardist of the Year 2001. He has played for SDHB/SGHS school productions, doing such shows as Grease, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. This is Scott’s second appearance in Pipin’ Hot.
